Preserved content (locked chips)
Jira can do things Markdown can't. Instead of dropping that content, Markdown Studio keeps it exactly as it is and shows it as a locked chip.
For example: 🔒 Panel (info): "Deploy only after…" 🔒 Status: IN PROGRESS 🔒 Image: diagram.png
What you can do with a chip
- Move it: select the whole chip, cut, and paste it somewhere else.
- Delete it: select it and press Delete or Backspace. That content is removed when you save.
- Duplicate it: copy and paste it. Each copy is saved.
- You can't edit inside a chip. To change a panel or macro, use Jira's editor.
In the Markdown source, a chip is a link such as [⧉ Panel (info): "…"](adf:3). The number refers to the original content for this editing session only.
What becomes a chip
| Content | Chip |
|---|---|
| Panels, expands | Block chip |
| Images, attachments, files | Block or inline chip |
| Macros and extensions, layouts, decisions, synced blocks, embedded and block cards | Block chip |
| Status lozenges, dates, placeholders, inline macros | Inline chip |
| Coloured, underlined, highlighted, subscript or superscript text, or text with comments | Inline chip |
| Centred, right-aligned or indented paragraphs and headings | Block chip |
| Tables with merged cells, cell colours, numbered rows, no header row or rich cell content | Block chip |
When a chip has to move
Some content can only live in certain places. A panel can't go inside a list item, for example. If you put a chip somewhere Jira doesn't allow, it's saved just after that block instead, and the editor tells you.
What resets when you save
- Custom table column widths (the editor warns you).
- Emoji are saved as their text, for example 🎉.
- Code block display options such as line wrapping.
- Empty paragraphs (blank lines) in Jira's editor.
Copy as Markdown
Copy Markdown turns chips into readable labels such as [Image: diagram.png], so the text pastes cleanly into GitHub or Slack.
